Enhancing The Role Of Wastewater Management In Achieving Sustainable Development Objectives
Abstract
Currently, the world is focused on achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) that have been adopted globally. It is important for decision-makers to examine how technology can aid in the attainment of the SDGs and to avoid any potential trade-offs. This study investigates the role of wastewater management in achieving the SDGs and shows that it can help achieve 11 out of the 17 SDGs. The primary benefit is the increase in water availability, which can lead to zero hunger and clean water and sanitation (SDGs 2 and 6, respectively). Wastewater treatment can also improve global health (SDG 3), provide a new source of income for smallholders (SDGs 1 and 8), generate affordable and clean energy and support innovation and infrastructure (SDGs 7 and 9), as well as decrease the environmental impact of wastewater (SDGs 11, 12, 13, and 14). The study also discusses the challenges related to achieving and evaluating these targets. Overall, this research highlights the considerable influence of wastewater management in the attainment of the United Nations' SDGs and global targets.
