Abstract

This paper highlights the opportunities for the Internet of Things in the transportation industry. The need for the Internet of Things and its architecture to address various complex challenges in the transportation sector are discussed. Various smart applications of the Internet of Things and its noticeable benefits over the existing technology are well articulated. In addition, the role of new and emerging technology such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, cloud, data storage, and analysis for future sustainable transportation are highlighted with specific cases. Furthermore, smart areas of the Internet of Things in transportation are pictorially discussed. In addition, relevant studies on different IoT sensors are reviewed and classified according to their sensor type, application, and example. It is imperative to highlight that the research area on data collection, storage, and analysis is less often discussed in most studies. The paper singles out five major challenges associated with implementation of smart transportation that should be addressed including, privacy issues, cybersecurity issues, technology costs, system complexity, and interoperability and connectivity issues. Also attention is drawn to emerging technologies and data analytics strategies that are vital for handling large volume of transportation data as well as different data collection and storage strategies with specific tools are highlighted. Finally, the study provides an insight into the future direction on exploring innovative funding models, cost-sharing mechanisms, blockchain technology and advanced encryption and anonymization techniques as sustainable solution for a connected future.
